Uncovering Sapulpa’s Hidden Gems

Sapulpa is truly a treasure trove of historic Americana. As one of Oklahoma’s original oil boom towns, Sapulpa has a long history of being an important crossroad of travel, industry, and culture for the green country region. The large and well preserved downtown district still shows the elaborate wealth that once flowed through the town and manifested into a multitude of impressive edifices. Route 66 still snakes through the town and brings thousands of tourists who want to see the large section of original alignment on the west side of town complete with the historic Rock Creek Bridge from 1921. The neighborhoods south of downtown are still full of amazing craftsman and Victorian homes, many of which are lovingly preserved. Some of the original mansions are still there, including the historic Burnett Mansion on main street that hosts a fabulous tea room. The local historical society has amplified all of this by renovating and preserving almost an entire block of historic structures just off downtown including an antique filling station, fire museum, and the old YWCA building that houses three stories of detailed artifacts for the main museum.

Sapulpa is as enjoyable to live in as it is to visit, with an impressive array of amenities including an amazing collection of parks. Liberty park is home to a large splash pad and a small water park in addition to the standard playgrounds and ball fields, and Heritage park is hands-down of the best playgrounds in the state. On the north outskirts of town Sapulpa manages not one, but two amazing stocked fishing lakes, with one of them offering trout fishing in the winter and catfish in the summer. The town is also very active with events, including near-constant car shows, monthly live music downtown, and a variety of festivals throughout the year.

Sapulpa has somehow managed to keep its head down for the last few decades, but the secret is leaking out once again. Recently it was announced that Sapulpa will become the new home of a major international cosmetics company who plans to build a massive sprawling corporate campus just to the west of town proper. Additionally, the local industrial parks are rapidly expanding and new businesses are coming to town at a rapid pace. With jobs flowing in, hundreds of new homes and apartments are being built in the area. It won’t be long until Sapulpa is bursting at the seams again.
